Connecting in Our Community

To realize our vision of reimagining the way our community views and experiences serious illness, dying, and grief, Hospice of the Piedmont hosts regular events throughout Central Virginia.

Upcoming Events

Walking with Grief

Sunday, August 30th | 7:00 pm

675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Charlottesville, VA (Meet on the rear patio)

In Honor of National Grief Awareness Day

Grief comes in many forms. Whether you are mourning the death of a loved one, navigating a life transition, coping with illness, or carrying the weight of changes in your life or in the world around you, you are welcome here. Join us for a peaceful evening of reflection, connection, and community as we gather briefly and then walk together, pausing along the way for moments of quiet reflection.

No RSVP is required. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water, as the path includes uneven terrain and an uphill incline. We will walk in light rain, but the event will be canceled in the case of heavy rain.

Death Over Drafts at Kardinal Hall

Death Over Drafts is an evening of community, connection, and casual conversation about death. But don’t worry, this isn’t a gloomy affair. We’re here to celebrate the full cycle of life.

Participants are invited to gather in small groups and discuss thought-provoking questions selected by our team of Death Doulas. This is not a lecture; this is a discussion. Together, we’ll create a comfortable space to share stories and make it easier to talk about this inevitable chapter.

Date: Tuesday, September 22, 2026
Time: 5:30pm – 7:00pm (Must arrive by 5:45pm to be seated)
Location: Kardinal Hall, 722 Preston Ave, Charlottesville
Price: Admission is free. Drinks are up to you.

Leading the discussion is Beth Eck, the Director of End of Life Doula Services at Hospice of the Piedmont. Everyone’s welcome! So grab a pint, share in some good conversation, and let’s toast to living, dying, and everything in between!

Please note: This is not a Grief Support Group. If you are grieving and seeking help, please visit our Grief and Healing page for upcoming support groups and other resources.

Obituary Writing Workshop with Hero’s Bridge

“Obituaries have next to nothing to do with death and absolutely everything to do with life.” — Margalit Fox

Discover what that means in Hospice of the Piedmont’s Obituary Writing Workshop. Through guided reflection, discussion, and writing prompts, participants will explore how to shape an obituary that reflects what truly matters to them. Together, we’ll consider questions of purpose, audience, and tone; gather the essential facts of a life; and review examples ranging from straightforward to warm or even humorous.

Whether you leave with a complete draft, a meaningful beginning, or simply a clearer sense of how you want your life remembered, this workshop offers a thoughtful opportunity to reflect, prepare, and give your loved ones the gift of your own words.

Date: Wednesday, September 23, 2026
Time: 1:00 – 2:30 pm
Location: Warrenton United Methodist Church
Address: 341 Church Street, Warrenton, 20186

Death Studies Podcast Club

Introducing The Death Studies Podcast Podcast Club!

You’ve heard of a book club, a movie club, how about a podcast club? Join others to discuss selected episodes of The Death Studies Podcast. Beginning in 2021, the hosts of this podcast have been interviewing researchers, practitioners, and academics from different parts of the world about the changing theories and data in death and dying research. Experts from disciplines like philosophy, cultural anthropology, English literature, religion, psychology, and more share what they are learning regarding a wide range of topics related to death and dying.

The podcast creators have been working with us to curate a list of episodes and talking points, an exciting and unique feature of this endeavor! Each month participants of the podcast club will listen to a selected episode ahead of time and be prepared to discuss the issues under investigation. These meetings will be facilitated by local death workers. Move beyond personal beliefs to engage in emerging ideas about death, dying, bereavement, and loss. Share what was intriguing, what left you with questions, and what you want to know more about.

A Death Fest Side Quest, the podcast club is a joint venture of Woven Roots Collective, Hospice of the Piedmont, and Panorama Natural Burial.

This discussion will happen every 3rd Thursday of the month from 5:30-7 pm in the Parlor of the Unitarian Universalist Church. We hope you will join us!

This event is open to the public. Adults and older teens welcome. Please note that sensitive material may be discussed.
